10:30 – 10:40 The Search for Life in Alpha Centauri
Pete Worden – Breakthrough Prize Foundation
Humanity is on the verge of finding life elsewhere in the Universe and is approaching the capacity to send life purposefully. If life is found elsewhere there will likely be controversy about its origin. For example, for any life on another planet or moon, we will want to know if we share a common origin: was this life transferred to or from Earth, or did life arise independently on each world? The possibility that life can or might be transported among planets, systems, and galaxies – also known as panspermia – frames the major questions being explored by the privately funded Breakthrough Initiatives, founded in 2015.

13:50 – 14:10 Future Computing and Artificial Life
David Ackley University of New Mexico
Digital technology has had revolutionary impacts, but why did computer clock speeds stop increasing around 2004, even as computer security failures multiply with no end in sight? The deep answer to both issues is an eight-decades-old simplifying assumption called ‚hardware determinism‘, which is still taken as gospel in computer science and industry. But even in the 1940s, another approach was known to exist, because living systems compute without hardware determinism. The T2 Tile Project is developing a new computational stack — hardware, software, systems, and design — that moves beyond hardware determinism to offer indefinitely large computers with the inherent robustness of living systems. The future of computing is artificial life.
14:10 – 14:25 It’s Business Time: AI Hits Enterprise
Babak Hodjat Cognizant
What is the most impactful decisions that your business makes routinely? Are you using AI to help with these decisions? Have you considered using AI to actually come up with the decisions? Cognizant’s LEAF (Learning Evolutionary AI Framework) has been used in a wide variety of applications, from automated trading in the stock market, to web site optimization, to coming up with recipes to grow plants in controlled environments. LEAF uses Evolutionary Computation to automatically design Deep Learning solutions that are well suited to different domains, even when the domain-specific data is not sufficient. LEAF uses the same technique in order to construct a ‚prescriptor‘, which can be used to augment everyday business decision making. We will discuss how and why LEAF works and cover some of the use cases, along with demos!
14:25 – 14:45 Digitalization – The Cornerstone for Innovation

14:45 – 15:05 The Next Evolution of AI Assistants
Adam Cheyer Viv
For decades, the relationship between developer and computer was simple: the human told the machine what to do. Next came machine learning systems, where the machine was in charge of computing the functional logic behind developer-supplied examples, typically in a form that humans couldn’t even understand. Now we are entering a new age of software development, where humans and machines work collaboratively together, each doing what they do best. The Developer describes the „what“ — objects, actions, goals — and the machine produces the „how“, writing the code that satisfied each user’s request by interweaving developer-provided components. The result is a system that is easier to create and maintain, while providing an end-user experience that is more intelligent and adaptable to users‘ individual needs. In this talk, we will show concrete examples of this software trend applied to a next-generation conversational assistant. We will supply you with a freely downloadable development environment so that you can give this a try yourself, and start monetizing your content and services through a new channel that will be backed by more than a billion devices in just a few years.
15:05 – 15:25 Redefining Reality with Human-Eye Resolution VR
Niko Eiden Varjo
Today there are VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) devices on the market, which both provide very strong cues how we could redefine our reality with the help of technology in the future. Unfortunately, neither of these technologies is capable of changing reality by itself, but what if one would combine the two…?
15:25 – 15:50 Entrepreneurship in Top Gear
Luke Robert Mason Collete Davis Athlete
16:20 – 16:45 Reshaping the Asian Credit Landscape
Mark Tluszcz Mangrove Capital Partners, Geoffrey Prentice Oriente
More than a third of the world’s adult population, or some 1.7 billion people, have little or no access to formal financial services. In Southeast Asia, the problem is even greater, with more than 70 percent of the region’s estimated 640-million population remaining unbanked and a majority of them being from low- and middle-income segments. For greater inclusion, technology and data have a vital role to play in building a new, more equitable, and digital infrastructure that will enable millions—trapped by the limitations of existing financial systems—to break away and unlock their true economic potential. And this opens up opportunities for companies. During this session, you will learn more about how Oriente using a radical approach to accelerate financial inclusion and drive long-term value creation, one that requires bulding a new infrastructure to unlock financial access and using alternative data to create financial identities for hundreds of millions of people that have been “invisible” to the economy.
